NEW YORK — Orioles slugger Ryan O’Hearn was ejected from Wednesday’s game against the New York Mets for arguing balls and strikes after he struck out with the bases loaded in the eighth inning of a tie game.
O’Hearn pinch hit for left fielder Austin Slater, who batted leadoff and homered earlier in the game, to get a platoon advantage with Mets right-hander José Buttó on the mound. O’Hearn took a ball outside on the first pitch before home plate umpire Marvin Hudson called a strike on a sweeper outside the zone. O’Hearn struck out swinging two pitches later.
The 31-year-old slugger turned toward Hudson on his way back to the dugout and made a comment that elicited an immediate ejection from the veteran umpire. O’Hearn then got in Hudson’s face to argue before being ushered back to the dugout by manager Brandon Hyde. It’s the second time this season O’Hearn has been tossed from a game.

Earlier in the inning, Hudson made a call that favored the Orioles. With Ramón Urías facing a 3-2 count, Buttó threw an 87 mph changeup that was clearly inside the strike zone. Catcher Luis Torrens quickly fired a throw to second base to try and catch Colton Cowser stealing for a double play, but Hudson called the pitch a ball, allowing Urías and Cowser to advance safely. Jackson Holliday walked to load the bases, and after O’Hearn struck out, Adley Rutschman hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in the tying run. Gunnar Henderson popped out to third base to end the inning.

The Orioles lost in walk-off fashion for the second time in three days, 4-3, as Seranthony Domínguez allowed a game-winning solo home run by Jesse Winker in the bottom of the ninth. Domínguez gave up a walk-off homer to catcher Francisco Alvarez in the Orioles’ 4-3 loss on Monday night.
