High school sports roundup (Oct. 9)

Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Girls soccer

Century 3, Westminster 0: The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime with goals from Bella Coccio and Maddison Spradlin and assists from Cailyn Stine and Lexi McGinnis. McGinnis added a second-half goal off a rebound. In goal, Megan Taltavull made eight saves.

Liberty 1, South Carroll 1: Regulation time and two overtimes couldn’t solve anything between the Lions and Cavaliers. For Liberty, Bryce Sarver scored off an Erin Martin assist. Mady Smith made nine saves in goal. South Carroll’s goal came from Ella Boyce with Peyton Davis assisting. Sydney Mossman made 12 saves.

Chesapeake 8, Meade 0: Ella Cieri scored a hat trick and Lilly Barnum had two goals as the Cougars (10-2) advanced to the second round of the AACPS Showcase. Alaina Minefski and Eleyna Entsmir added a goal.

South River 3, Northeast 0: The host Seahawks (8-4) shut out the Eagles. Samie Clarke, Cami Burke and Shannon Creswell all scored, and South River got assists from Raegan Ogle and Addie Twomey. Monday, the Seahawks travel to Chesapeake-AA.

Severn 1, Bryn Mawr 1: The visiting Admirals (6-2-2, 3-2-1 IAAM B Conference) and Mawrtians (2-5-2, 1-3-1) played to a draw. Shelby Smith gave Bryn Mawr a 1-0 lead in the first half before Severn’s Alaina Subong tied the score assisted by Suzy Urban. Friday, the Admirals host Severna Park.

Boys soccer

Poly 2, City 1, OT: Maximus Rudham scored the game-winner with 30 seconds left in overtime to lift the visiting Engineers over the Knights. Poly trailed 1-0 before Christian Raysor scored the tying goal assisted by Jack Harburger with 11 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

C. Milton Wright 3, Fallston 0: The visiting Mustangs shut out the Cougars. C.M. Wright got a goal each from  Brandon Flynn, Liam Bender and Aiden Powers.

Harford Tech 1, Patterson Mill 1: The visiting Cobras and Huskies played to a draw. Chris Jimenez scored on an assist from Brody Smith for Harford Tech. For Patterson Mill, David Kim scored, assisted by Finn Pantazelos.

Francis Scott Key 5, Manchester Valley 4: Emmett Hollenbeck, Nathan Myers and Chris Bay all scored first-half goals to get the Eagles going as they took a 3-2 lead into the break. Charlie Study and Troy Defoor added goals in the second half. Evan Myers made five saves. Bay, Owen Stewart and Joel Wantz had assists.

Field hockey

Manchester Valley 1, Francis Scott Key 0: First place in Carroll County was up for grabs and the Eagles and Mavericks went into the fourth quarter scoreless. Finally, with 2:05 left, Sophie Baer fed Amanda Herrold for a goal that broke the tie and kept the Mavericks undefeated. FSK goalie Maddy Dehoff made 21 saves including one on a penalty stroke.

Westminster 4, Century 2: Abby Kerner scored twice, and Vivian Dunn and Reese Scholkoff each had a goal and the host Owls beat the Knights. Bella Garcia and Aubery Geist each scored a goal for Century.

Patterson Mill 3, Harford Tech 0: Emily Tapey had a goal and assist to lead the visiting Huskies over the Cobras. Lucy Bates and Payton Chase also scored. Maddie Tunney added an assist. In goal, Aubrey Jenkins made 16 saves.

John Carroll 4, Roland Park 0: The host Patriots (8-4, 3-1 IAAM B Conference) shut out the Reds (1-8, 0-5). John Carroll got goals from Claire Moffitt, Annie Minoglio, Maggie Scheidhauer, and Leah Foltyn. Monday, the Patriots host McDonogh.

North Harford 1, North East 0: Liv Tucker scored the game-winner assisted by Lila Barnaba to lift the host Hawks over the Indians.

Fallston 3, C. Milton Wright 0: Lily Burns had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Cougars over the Mustangs. Sarah Gent and Campbell Fox each scored for Fallston.

Severn 2, Mercy 2, OT: The host Admirals (6-3-2, 2-2-1 Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference) played to a stalemate with the Magic (2-4-3, 1-3-2). Addison Lamb and Sadie Elon each scored and Maddie Ripley had an assist for Severn.

St. Mary’s 3, McDonogh 1: Finlay Davidson and Natalie McLaughlin each had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Saints (6-3-1, 5-0 IAAM B Conference) over the Eagles (7-4-1, 1-3-1). The win was the third straight.

Annapolis 1, North County 0 (2OT): The Panthers advanced to the second round of the AACPS Showcase scoring in double overtime on a penalty stroke. For the Knights, Ava Karopchinski made 19 saves in goal, while Shyann Giunta and Karrah Lathe made a defensive save each.

River Hill 2, Wilde Lake 0: The host Hawks shut out the Wildecats. Katelyn Sauritch and Carolyn Dzubak each scored, and Maya Chan and Sophie Chudnovsky each had an assist. River Hill led 1-0 in the first half.

Centennial 2, Atholton 0: Claire Whipkey and Annabel Arrington scored in the Eagles’ win. Caroline Cudzilo assisted both goals for Centennial (9-2, 4-1 Sierra Division) in the win as Jane Baldy made eight saves in the shutout.

Bryn Mawr 8, St. Paul’s 0: Penelope Kousouris scored three goals and Addie Polakoff had one goal and three assists to lead the host Mawrtians (9-1, 3-1 IAAM A Conference) over the Gators (3-7, 0-4).  The victory was the fifth straight and eighth shutout.

Girls volleyball

South River 3, Chesapeake-AA 0: Karlee Hawkins had 11 kills and Hannah Takacs went 19-20  serving with four aces and  three kills to lead the Seahawks over the Cougars. South River won, 25-5, 25-18, 25-19.

Crofton 3, North County 0: Kristen Kupp has five aces, as well as two kills, four assists and five digs for the Cardinals, which won the first round of the AACPS Showcase, 25-11, 25-14, 25-20. Addison Matsui struck seven kills and three blocks.

South Carroll 3, Manchester Valley 2: Leah Miller (10 digs), Elaina Murphy (14 kills) and Pia White (32 assists) led the visiting Cavaliers over the Mavericks. South Carroll won in a five-set thriller, 25-22, 25-18, 22-25, 24-26, 15-13. Haley Frazier and Kaelyn Bowyer each added four aces.

Winters Mill 3, Century 1: The Falcons topped the Knights in four sets, 25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-15. For Century, Gabby Zajaczkowski led with 10 kills and Hannah Heffernan had six. Abhi Yadlapalli served five aces and Corinne Zepp picked up 17 digs.

Liberty 3, Francis Scott Key 0: The Lions swept the Eagles, 25-20, 30-28, 25-23. Jasmine Bada led the will with 11 kills and Emme Powers had nine. Haleigh Hodges led defensively with 11 digs. Leah Esmond had eight digs to go with seven aces.

Annapolis 3, Meade 1: Christen Brisbane hit 21 kills to help lead the Panthers (8-1) to the second round of the AACPS Showcase, 25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18. Lindsay Lyman had 11 kills. Meg Ronayne put up 24 assists and six kills. McHale Hughes made 26 assists. Carolin Heyder added 12 kills and nine digs.

Broadneck 3, Southern 0: Barrett Bolter  (23 service points, 6 aces, 7 assists 13 digs and Chloe Hayes (17 service points, 1 ace, 3 digs) led the host Bruins over the Bulldogs. Broadneck won, 25-6, 25-9, 25-8.

Boys volleyball

Patterson Mill 3, Havre de Grace 1: The Huskies beat the host Warriors. Patterson Mill won, 22-25, 25-8, 25-16, 25-12. The Huskies were led by Dylan Lewis (12 kills, 8 aces), Titus Lyttle (16 assists, 11 aces), and Blaise Jones (9 kills, 2 aces).
