River Hill’s Helen Yeung had built a personal dynasty, winning three straight Class 4A/3A individual girls state championships. While she has graduated, the family dynasty may continue on.
Michelle Yeung leads Zoe Cusick of Winston Churchill by one shot after the first day of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association state championships. Yeung shot a 1-under-par 70 on Monday at the University of Maryland Golf Course.
Marriotts Ridge’s Lila Becker is tied for fifth after shooting a 76. Her Mustangs, however, have the early lead in the race for the team state championship. Marriotts Ridge’s four golfers posted a collective score of 304, one shot ahead of Winston Churchill and River Hill.
George Williamson shot a 73, good enough to tie for fourth in the boys division, to lead Marriotts Ridge. Also for the Mustangs, Jonathan Moon shot a 77 and Aidan Kim added a 78. For River Hill, backing Yeung was Mark Berg (74), Evelyn Park (80) and Justin Choi (81).
Broadneck (313) and Dulaney (319) also made the cut for the team finals.
In the boys standings, Dulaney’s Ryan Dannenfelser and Crofton’s Owen Newberry are tied for second place with an even-par 71, two shots behind Northern-Calvert’s Jack Gladfelter. Newberry won last year’s state championship in a playoff.
Broadneck’s Ben Coe is tied with Williamson for fourth with a 73. Berg’s 74 has him tied for seventh.
The state championships continue Tuesday with the first round of the 2A/1A tournament. The finals for both classes take place Wednesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
