High school sports roundup (Oct. 31)

Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Thursday, Oct. 31

Field hockey

Manchester Valley  5, Chesapeake 0-AA 0: The host Mavericks (15-0) shut out the Cougars in Class 2A.  Georgia Wurzburger had a goal and an assist. Other goal scores included: Taylor Fique, Shelby Wurzburger, Allie Largent and Lily Brookhart.

Westminster 3, Linganore 1: Stevie Schultz and Lilly Speigle each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Owls to the 3A quarterfinal win. Gabi Thomas also recorded a goal for the Owls. In goal, Natalie Schultz made five saves. The Owls await the winner of Rockville and Northern-Calvert.

Glenelg 8, Huntingtown 0: Brinkley Eyre and Meghan Walker each had a hat trick and an assist to lead the host Gladiators over the Hurricanes in Class 2A. Other standouts for Glenelg were Cate Staley (2 goals, 1 assist) and Lexi Winters (1 assist).

Severna Park 5, Reservoir 0:  Ava Zimmerman and Sydney Day each had a goal and two assists to lead the host Falcons over the Gators in Class 3A. Other scorers included Hannah Pope (1 goal, 1 assist), Emma Weber (1 goal) and Grace Moran (1 goal). Severna Park will face the winner of Long Reach/Dulaney in a state semifinal.

St. Mary’s 5, Mercy 0: Paige Heary had a goal and an assist and Ava Boland had two assists to lead the host Saints (12-4-1) over the Magic (3-9-3) in an Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference semifinal. St. Mary’s got a goal each from Blair Bernard, Avery Bourke, Ryleigh Kline and Jaci Frederick and an assist by Natalie McLaughlin. The Saints face John Carroll, a 2-0 winner over  Severn, in Sunday’s championship at Stevenson at 2 p.m.

Boys soccer

Gerstell 3, Park 2: Justin Rudo scored twice and Gavin Larson had one goal to lead the Falcons (10-5-2, 6-4 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference) over the Bruins (5-8-2, 2-6-2). Gerstell ended the regular season on a three-game winning streak.
