Here is a roundup of state college football games played on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Division I
Towson 31, North Carolina A&T 13: Devin Matthews scored two touchdowns and the host Tigers (6-5, 4-3 Colonial Athletic Association) held the Aggies (1-10, 0-7) scoreless until late in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Towson’s defense had six sacks and forced eight punts. N.C. A&T scored two touchdowns over the final 7:47 of the game.
Brown threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Matthews two minutes into the game and Matthews scored on a 7-yard run midway through the second quarter as Towson led 17-0 at the break.
Tyrell Grene Jr. and Ike Daniels had short touchdown runs for the Tigers, who piled up 338 yards on offense. Brown was 23 of 35 for 251 yards. Towson travels to Campbell next Saturday.
South Carolina State 54, Morgan State 7: Backup quarterback Ryan Stubblefield threw two touchdown passes and South Carolina State drubbed Morgan State to clinch the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.
The Bulldogs (8-2, 4-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) built a 26-0 lead and were never challenged. The last time SC State reached eight wins was 2019, when it went 8-3 overall and 6-2 in conference.
Eric Phoenix, who was 10 of 11 passing, threw a 31-yard touchdown to Justin Smith-Brown with 6:03 left in the first quarter for the game’s first score. But after a 15-yard run that ended with an awkward slide, Phoenix limped off the field and didn’t return.
Early in the second, Tyler Smith raced 86 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and SC State led 13-0.
On the Bears’ (5-6, 2-2) ensuing drive, Jarod Washington intercepted Dominique Anthony and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. The failed 2-point conversion attempt made it 19-0. Diego Addison had a 100-yard pick-6 in the third quarter that made it 47-7.
Malique Leatherbury scored the Bears’ only touchdown with an 11-yard run with 3:10 left before halftime.
SC State will end the regular season against Norfolk State on Nov. 23. Regardless of the outcome of that game, the Bulldogs will face the winner of the SWAC championship game between Jackson State and Southern in the Celebration Bowl on Dec. 14.
Division II
Fairmont State 31, Frostburg State 28: Emmanuel Richardson kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired to break the the third and final tie and lift the visiting Falcons (7-4, 6-3 Mountain East Conference) over the Bobcats (6-5, 4-5). Frostburg State trailed for most of the game and tied the score twice. Owen Doyle had two 5-yard touchdown runs in the third quarter. The first tied the score at 21, and the second put Frostburg up 28-21. Fairmont answered with two scores in the fourth quarter.
Division III
Johns Hopkins 35, McDaniel 0: Geoff Schroeder (9 carries for 77 yards) had two touchdown runs and the visiting Blue Jays (9-1, 6-0 Centennial Conference) shut out the Green Terror (1-9, 0-6). Jayden Booker completed 23 of 31 passes for 192 yards for McDaniel. Ethan Lollar went 7-for-8 for 141 yards and a touchdown for Hopkins. The win was the seventh straight and second shutout in a row after beating Dickinson, 30-0, on Nov. 9. The Blue Jays will advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Salisbury 58, Kean 28: SyRus McGowan rushed for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to lead the visiting Sea Gulls (10-0, 6-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference) over the Cougars (2-8, 2-4). The victory completed a perfect regular season as Salisbury advances to the NCAA Division III playoffs. McGowan had back-to-back touchdown runs of 50 yards and 9 yards in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. Micah Brubaker (4 catches for 96 yards) had two touchdown receptions for the Sea Gulls.
King’s College 33, Stevenson 21: The visiting Mustangs (5-5, 5-4 Middle Atlantic Conference) led early in the fourth quarter before the Monarchs (9-1, 9-0) pulled ahead with less than nine minutes left. Stevenson took its final lead, 21-20, on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Adams to Makhi Walker and extra point by Donnie Waitt (John Carroll) with 13:41 left in the game. The MAC champion King’s College pulled ahead less than five minutes later. The Mustangs were eliminated from contention for the MAC Centennial Bowl but could be selected for the ECAC Bowl.
