Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Boys basketball
Joppatowne 78, North East 30: Kishann Smith scored a game-high 18 points to lead the host Mariners over the Indians. Joppatowne led 44-16 in the first half. Phil Clark was tops on the glass, pulling down 12 rebounds. Also, Kendall Pollock had four steals, Damian Brooks handed out four assists and Vance Jones blocked four shots.
Patterson Mill 73, Elkton 58: The visiting Huskies had four players score in double digits: Colin Luddy ( 20), James Kropp (18) James Hammond (16), Drew Pager (13), and beat the Golden Elks. Keenan Minter scored a game-high 35 points for Elkton.
Broadneck 75, North County 38: Jordan Brown scored 20 points and Joey Smargissi had 11 points to lead the host Bruins (9-3, 3-0 Anne Arundel) over the Knights.
Meade 71, Chesapeake-AA 39: Arouna Soumaoro scored 15 points and Zamar Jones had 14 points to lead the visiting Mustangs (8-3, 1-2 Anne Arundel) over the Cougars. The win halted a two-game slide.
Liberty 56, Manchester Valley 48: The Lions got 18 points from Tristan West and 17 from Cole Jernigan to hold off the Mavericks. Carter Strohman led Manchester Valley with 12 points.
Lake Clifton 77, Forest Park 69: Senior guard JaZae Jones scored a game-high 27 points for the Lakers.
Severna Park 47, Southern 43: Brian Griffin scored 19 points and Ethan Sheffey had 15 points, but the host Bulldogs fell to the Falcons.
Girls basketball
Westminster 53, Glenelg 29: One night after a dramatic overtime conference victory, the Owls crossed county lines and cruised to a win. Maddy Gassman led with 16 points. Brinley Boag backed her with 11 points and Kaelyn Battle chipped in six.
South Carroll 54, Long Reach 30: The Cavaliers picked up the nonconference win behind 16 points each from Leah Miller and Harley McKee. Lucy Harrigan chipped in nine points.
Gerstell 60, Bryn Mawr 40: Annie Jackson scored 23 points to lead the host Falcons (10-5, 6-0 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference) over the Mawrtians (7-8, 2-4). The victory was the seventh straight.
Broadneck 51, North County 24: London Best had 15 points and nine steals and Mackenzie Wharton had 14 points to lead the visiting Bruins over the Knights. Broadneck had 27 steals in the game, 17 in the first half.
Chesapeake-AA 50, Meade 39: Maggie Lawrence had a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the host Cougars over the Mustangs. Evhan Smith had 14 points for Meade.
Arundel 52, Northeast 33: The visiting Wildcats took a 12-5 lead in the first quarter over the Eagles. Justyce Ferdinand scored a game-high 24 points for Arundel.
Severna Park 50, Southern 29: Ava Wooster scored a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds but it wasn’t enough in the Bulldogs’ loss to the Falcons. Ryn Feemater had 16 points for Severna Park.
