Maryland football will play against its 2024 leading passer and rusher next season.

Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. will transfer to Wisconsin, which hosts the Terps on Sept. 20. Running back Roman Hemby announced Monday that he’s joining Indiana, which will visit College Park on Nov. 1. Hemby ran for 117 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries in a meeting with Indiana earlier this year, also adding 48 receiving yards and a score. Clearly, his performance impressed coach Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers, who made the College Football Playoff this year. Indiana fell Friday in the first round against Notre Dame.

Maryland will miss Edwards and Hemby. The quarterback led the team with 2,881 passing yards in 2024 before opting to leave for another Big Ten program. Hemby, an Edgewood native and John Carroll graduate, rushed for 607 yards and six touchdowns to pace the Terps this year. He amassed 2,347 rushing yards during his time with the Terps, including a 989-yard season in 2022.

Although the Terps have lost significant talent via the transfer portal, especially in their offensive backfield, they’re starting to add players, too. Maryland added UCLA quarterback Justyn Martin, who has two years of eligibility left after playing sparingly for the Bruins in 2024. He completed 24 of his 35 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. Martin adds depth at the quarterback position and could compete with MJ Morris and incoming freshman Malik Washington, a Spalding graduate, for the starting gig.

Maryland also added a few notable receiving threats in tight end Dorian Fleming (Georgia State), wide receiver Jalil Faroq (Oklahoma) and wide receiver Kaleb Webb (Tennessee). The Terps are still looking to bring in additional talent after going just 4-8 in 2024, but they’re off to a decent start on the transfer recruiting trail.
