The Capital Gazette is honoring one boys and one girls high school student-athlete each week as Athletes of the Week. To submit nominations, email kfominykh@baltsun.com or direct message @capgazsports on Instagram by Saturday evening.

Boys athlete of the week

Myles Bryan, Broadneck

On Dec. 18, Broadneck junior Myles Bryan broke his indoor track program’s long jump record by leaping 20 feet, 4.5 inches. The previous mark was set in 2022 by Doug McCarren at 20-1.

Bryan surrendered basketball last year to focus on track after a “breakout” spring season, per coach Josh Webster.

“He hit 20-2 this spring in the long jump and 39-9 in the triple jump in his first season as a jumper,” Webster said. “He took to it right away and has been a natural at it. Myles is a very coachable, a positive influence on his peers and constantly pushes himself to do this best.”

Girls athlete of the week

Alexandra Vandiver, St. Mary’s

In a week brimming by accomplishments by her fellow Saints teammates, junior Alexandra Vandiver — known better to her team by her nickname “A-Love” — stood out. She eclipsed 1,000 career points during St. Mary’s close victory over South River on Dec. 21, finishing with a team-high 20 points, including two 3-pointers. The night before, she fired another two 3s and 13 points against Holy Cross and 21 points and 5 3-pointers against McDonogh on Dec. 18. She also passed 600 career rebounds earlier this winter.

“Alove has been a double double machine since she arrived as a freshman,” Saints coach Leo Latonick said. “Her scoring and rebounding is something that we rely on each game.  She had a big 4th quarter against South River when we really needed it.”
