Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Girls basketball
Chesapeake-AA 54, Arundel 30: The visiting Cougars (11-2) beat the Wildcats, led by Kiery Matkins (16 points), Ella Cieri (15 points, 5 steals) and Kendall Kotofski (4 points, 7 rebounds). Saffiya Carson and Anna Bristol each scored six points for Arundel.
Meade 53, North County 33: The visiting Mustangs (4-4) beat the Knights (3-5). Jasmine Dailey recorded a career-high 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Mustangs, while Naomi Williams scored 12 points and 18 rebounds, the latter for her own career-high.
Southern 46, Severn Run 32: Huntyr Marks notched her first career triple-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals for the Bulldogs. La’Ren Watkins added 10 points and four rebounds. In the Wolves’ loss, Jordyn Acree netted 20 points.
South River 67, Old Mill 33: Kiera West scored a game-high 24 points to lead the visiting Seahawks (5-3) over the Patriots (4-3). Other top performers for South River included Ryleigh Adams (10 points) and Cami Burke (9 points, 7 assists, 7 steals). Layla Anderson had nine points for Old Mill.
Westminster 60, Liberty 34: The visiting Owls (9-2) beat the Lions (4-7). Westminster was led by Maddy Gassman (18 points), Emma Jones (10 points) and Aspen Higgs (7 points).
Manchester Valley 31, Winters Mill 19: The visiting Mavericks (7-5) beat the Falcons (4-8). Manchester Valley was led by Emma Penczek (12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals), Taylor Fique (10 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals) and Lilah Kresslein (7 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals).
Francis Scott Key 75, Boonsboro 30: The Eagles jumped out to a 30-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Summer Brooks tallied 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jayla Watson backed her with 15 points and nine rebounds. Ave Hoeflich totaled 10 points and eight rebounds and Morgan Kenney chipped in eight points. Also inside, Caroline Kohr shared the team-high with nine rebounds and Kensi Bancroft pulled in nine. Abby Rieger led defensively with five steals.
South Carroll 41, Century 29: The Cavaliers picked up their sixth straight win with Leah Miller’s 15 points leading the charge. Caden Curtin added seven points in the win.
Boys basketball
Franklin 64, Towson 55: The Indians turned a one-point halftime lead into a nine-point advantage after three quarters as they cruised to the win. Khari Gregg’s 18 points paced Franklin, one of four Indians to score in double figures. Reggie Asoluka backed him with 15, Jeremiah Askew followed with 14 and Jalen Richardson chipped in 12. Seven Wheeler had a game-high 20 points for Towson.
South River 64, Old Mill 63: The host Seahawks stayed perfect. South River leaders included: Jamie Finn (18 points), Jonah Hall (15 points), Jaden McDuffie (12 points) and Jake Evans (11 points). Finn scored eight of his points in the fourth quarter, including two big 3-pointers to help the Seahawks hold off the Patriots.
Arundel 106, Chesapeake-AA 48: The visiting Wildcats (8-4) extended their 15-point, first-quarter lead with a 32-11 run in the second quarter and beat the Cougars. Arundel got double-digit scoring from Javeon Reed (19 points), Landon Jenkins (16 points), Ellis Johnson (12 points) and Samson Anjorin (10 points). The victory was the first in triple-digit scoring of the season and eclipsed the previous largest point differential of 30 points on Jan. 3.
Glen Burnie 62, Northeast 46: Chris Maddox scored 30 points to lead the host Gophers (7-4) past the Eagles (5-7). Other top performers for Glen Burnie included Braeden Buchanan (11 points, 14 rebounds), CJ Jones (8 points, 10 rebounds). Northeast was led by Titus Simeona (19 points) and Bryson Bradley (13 points).
Southern 58, Severn Run 57: Solomon Bernard scored a game-high 21 points and Jayden Gonzalez had 16 points, but the visiting Wolves fell to the Bulldogs. Southern was led by Ethan Sheffey (19 points, 5 steals), Daniel Lewis (14 points), Bryson Mims (11 points, 7 rebounds) and Wyatt Brady (10 points, 7 rebounds).
Broadneck 68, Annapolis 64: Karmari Williams scored 23 points to lead the visiting Bruins (10-3) over the Panthers (4-6). Other leaders for Broadneck included: Ashton Sellman (13 points) and Drew Cahall (12 points).
Crofton 61, Chesapeake Science Point 35: The visiting Cardinals (3-8) beat the Tigers. Crofton was led by Ethan Collett (14 points, 8 rebounds) and Dylan Shafer (12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists).
St. Frances 70, Boys’ Latin 65: The visiting Panthers (8-1, 7-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) bounced back from the previous loss and beat the Lakers (7-6, 2-6). St. Frances had three players score in double figures: Jasiah Cannady (22 points), Trent Egbiremolen (19 points) and Terence Jones (17 points).
