Here’s the weekly state college lacrosse roundup.
Division I men
No. 4 Johns Hopkins 9, Loyola Maryland 8: The visiting Blue Jays scored twice in the final 1:19 to rally past the Greyhounds on Saturday.
After Luke Murphy scored to give Loyola (0-3) an 8-7 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Matt Collison answered with just over a minute left to tie the game. With the Blue Jays (4-0) playing a man up after a slashing penalty, Russell Melendez scored the game-winner with 41 seconds remaining.
The Greyhounds had a golden chance to extend their late lead before Hopkins made a key defensive stop. Up 8-7 with the clock approaching the two-minute mark, Loyola found Henry Haberman on a quick feed to the slow slot. But Luke Martin checked the ball from Haberman’s stick and Quintan Kilrain scooped up the ground ball and cleared.
Melendez finished with four goals and an assist to lead the Blue Jays, while Collison and Stuart Phillips each scored twice. Loyola transfer Luke Staudt made five saves against his former team.
Matthew Minicus had two goals and two assists to lead a balanced attack for the Greyhounds, who had six other players finish with one goal apiece. Luke Murphy had a goal and two assists and Max Watkinson made 13 saves for Loyola, which lost in overtime, 8-7, to then-No. 5 Maryland last weekend.
Mount St. Mary’s 15, Wagner 9: Jack Smith had three goals and three assists and Marcelo Carreiro scored three goals to lead the visiting Mountaineers (2-2) over the Seahawks (0-3) on Saturday.
After falling behind 3-1, Mount St. Mary’s tied the game by the end of the first quarter and then outscored Wagner 7-1 in the second quarter to take a commanding 10-4 lead. Bennett Wright made 14 saves.
UMBC 9, Drexel 6: Corey Myers, Nick Gutierrez and Connor Chick each scored two goals to lead the visiting Retrievers (1-0) to a season-opening win over the Dragons (0-1) on Saturday.
Alex Steers (7-for-14) and Dylan Hendrix (3-for-3) combined to win more than half of their faceoffs while Connor McMahon made 10 saves for UMBC.
St. Bonaventure 9, Mount St. Mary’s 8, OT: Jack Smith scored back-to-back goals to give the host Mountaineers (1-2) a one-goal lead late in the fourth quarter Tuesday, but the Bonnies (1-2) scored the last two goals to win. Kellan Pulera scored the tying goal with 2:12 left and Drew Kenney scored the game-winner with 3:13 left in overtime.
No. 2 Syracuse 18, No. 16 Towson 7: The host Orange (3-0) extended their four-goal lead with a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to beat the Tigers (0-2) on Monday. Luke Downs (Calvert Hall) made 11 saves for Towson. The Tigers’ offense was led by Ronan Fitzpatrick (2 goals, 1 assist) and Bode Maurer (2 goals).
Division III men
McDaniel 15, Gwynedd Mercy 3: Aidan Skelly had four goals and two assists, Jason Fritz and AJ Johnson each scored three goals and Nick Wingo had two goals and two assists to lead the host Green Terror (1-0) over the Griffins (0-1) on Saturday.
No. 2 Salisbury 17, Scranton 4: Michael Leahy scored four goals and Brice Bromwell finished with two goals and four assists to power the host Sea Gulls (3-0) over the Royals (0-1) on Saturday.
St. Mary’s 14, Juniata 3: Declan Horton had three goals and an assist to lead the visiting Seahawks (1-1) over the Eagles (0-1) on Saturday. Cullen McKay made 10 saves to earn the win.
Washington College 12, Berry 6: Nate Winters scored three goals and Grant Matthews added a goal and three assists to lift the host Shoremen (1-0) over the Vikings (0-2) on Saturday.
Goucher 14, Methodist 9: Gianni Karam scored five goals, Milan Temple had four goals and an assist and Jacob Morgan chipped in two goals and four assists to lead the host Gophers (2-0) over the Monarchs (0-3) on Saturday.
No. 18 Stevenson 18, Muhlenberg 6: The visiting Mustangs (2-0) extended their one-goal lead with a 5-0 run in the first half and beat the Mules (0-1) on Friday. Stevenson was led by Gavin Gossen (5 goals), Max Racich (4 goals, 3 assists) and Darrell Curtis (4 goals, 2 assists). Mustangs goalie Tyler Merchant made 13 saves.
York (Pa.) 13, St. Mary’s 1: The host Seahawks (0-1) outscored the Spartans (1-0), 6-2 in the second half, but still lost on Sunday. York took an 11-5 lead in the first half. St. Mary’s was led by Declan Horton with four goals and an assist, and Joshua Martel (North County) and Aiden Doyle (Broadneck) with three goals each.
Division I women
No. 10 Johns Hopkins 12, No. 19 Duke 11, OT: Ashley Mackin scored the game-winner in overtime to lift the host Blue Jays (1-1) over the Blue Devils on Saturday.
Hopkins led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter and 10-5 midway through the third before Duke mounted a furious comeback bid. Carly Bernstein scored her fifth goal of the game with 57 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 11 and force overtime before Mackin scored her fifth of the afternoon to end it.
Mackin added two assists, Ava Angello had three goals and an assist and Lacey Downey chipped in a goal and three assists to lead the Blue Jays, who bounced back from a 12-11 loss to Florida last week.
No. 14 Navy 17, Villanova 16: Tori DiCarlo scored five goals and Emily Messinese added three goals and two assists to help the visiting Midshipmen (2-0) hold off the Wildcats (2-1) on Saturday. Lola Leone, Alyssa Chung and Ava Yovino each scored two goal for Navy, which went ahead for good, 8-7, in the second quarter and led by as many as four goals.
No. 16 Loyola Maryland 17, American 4: Chase Boyle scored seven goals, Mim Suares-Jury scored four and Georgia Latch added three goals and an assist to lead the host Greyhounds (1-1) to a dominant victory over the Eagles (1-2) on Saturday. Lauren Spence made four saves to earn the win as Loyola outshot American 35-14.
Mount St. Mary’s 14, Lafayette 6: Anna Salerno had four goals and two assists and Anna McQuay scored four goals to lead the host Mountaineers (2-0) over the Leopards (1-1) on Saturday. Madison Harmening added two goals and Camille Thomas made 10 saves for Mount St. Mary’s.
UMBC 24, Howard 4: Emily Knapp finished with six goals and three assists, Katana Nelson scored five goals and Grace Bruce and Emma O’Callaghan each scored a hat trick to help the host Retrievers (2-0) cruise to a win over the Bison (0-3) on Saturday.
Towson 10, Georgetown 9, 2OT: Katie Roszko (C. Milton Wright) scored the game-winner assisted by Milana Zizakovic with 1:59 left in the second overtime to lift the visiting Tigers (1-1) over the Hoyas () on Thursday. Georgetown’s Sophia Loschert scored the tying goal with less than 7 1/2 minutes left in regulation. Valerie Thompson (Liberty) had a hat trick and Jenna Cardeno made 15 saves for Towson. Loschert and Gracie Driggs (St. Mary’s) each scored twice for the Hoyas.
UMBC 20, Delaware State 5: The visiting Retrievers (1-0) fell behind 2-0 before going on an 11-0 run to beat the Hornets (0-2) on Tuesday. Emily Knapp (Maryvale) and Grace Bruce (Century) each scored a game-high five goals and Libby Staples had three goals. UMBC outshot Delaware State, 43-11, and forced 16 turnovers.
Division III women
Randolph-Macon 16, Hood 7: The host Blazers (0-2) took a 4-3 lead in the first quarter but were held to just three goals the rest of the way in a loss to the Yellow Jackets (2-0) on Saturday. Abby Burnette scored three goals and Julia Gregory and Rachel Harper each scored two for Hood.
Shenandoah 15, St. Mary’s 14, OT: The Seahawks rallied to tie the game with just over a minute left in regulation before losing in overtime Saturday against the host Hornets (1-0). Colin Horton scored six goals and Madison Laine added four goals and an assist for St. Mary’s (0-1).
Juniata 11, Stevenson 6: The host Mustangs (1-1) finished on a 4-1 run and beat the Eagles (0-2) on Friday. Stevenson was led by Kara Yarusso with four goals and Olivia Galati with three goals. Next Saturday Stevenson travels to Washington College.
