No. 9 Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse beats No. 15 North Carolina, 13-9 | ROUNDUP

Here’s the weekly roundup of state men and women’s college lacrosse games.

Division I men’s lacrosse

No. 9 Johns Hopkins 13, No. 15 North Carolina 9: Brendan Grimes had three goals and an assist to lead the visiting Blue Jays (4-1) over the Tar Heels (2-1) on Saturday. Garrett Degnon, Russell Melendez (Archbishop Spalding), Jimmy Ayers and Matt Collison each scored two goals for Hopkins. Dominic Pietramala (Boys’ Latin), the son of former Blue Jays coach and current North Carolina defensive coordinator Dave Pietramala, led UNC with two goals and an assist.

No. 13 Penn State 13, Navy 3: Will Peden scored four goals and the visiting Nittany Lions (3-1) went on an 8-0 run in the second half Saturday to surge past the Midshipmen (2-2). Max Hewitt, Jack Flaherty and Jackson Peters scored for Navy, which pulled within 5-3 early in the third quarter before being shut out.

UMBC 18, Mount St. Mary’s 6: Brian Tregoning scored six goals and Mike Doughty (Glenelg) had two goals and five assists to lead the visiting Retrievers (1-1) over the Mountaineers (0-4) on Saturday. Cormac Giblin had two goals and an assist and Kyle Cullen added a goal and two assists for Mount St. Mary’s.

Towson 15, Saint Joseph’s 7: The visiting Tigers (3-1) opened with a 6-0 run and beat the Hawks (0-3) on Friday. Mikey Weisshaar (Archbishop Spalding) scored four goals and Joaquin Villagomez (Severna Park) had three for Towson. Levi Anderson scored four goals for Saint Joseph’s. Luke Downs (Calvert Hall) made 13 saves for the Tigers.

Division II men’s lacrosse

Frostburg State 29, Wheeling 9: Austin Sipes (five goals, eight assists) and Bubba Love (eight goals, five assists) set single-game program records for points with 13 apiece as the Bobcats (1-0) throttled the visiting Cardinals (2-2) in their season opener Saturday.

Saint Michael’s at Frostburg State, canceled: Sunday’s game between the Purple Knights and the Bobcats was canceled because of inclement weather. Both teams will open their seasons Friday. Frostburg State will host Wheeling and St. Michael’s will travel to Bridgeport.

Division III men’s lacrosse

Salisbury 14, Gettysburg 8: Jude Brown and Brice Bromwell each had four goals and an assist to lead the host Sea Gulls (4-0) over the Bullets (1-1) on Saturday.

McDaniel 14, Goucher 7: Jason Fritz scored four goals to lead the visiting Green Terror (2-0) over the Gophers (1-1) on Saturday. Holden Vance had two goals and three assists for Goucher.

Hood 21, Virginia Wesleyan 11: Owen McDermott scored five goals and Rio Muldoon added four goals and three assists to lead the host Blazers (3-1) over the Marlins (1-2) on Saturday.

Washington & Lee 17, Washington College 9: Ben Dickinson scored three goals and Cory Morgan added two, but the visiting Shoremen (0-2) fell to the Generals (1-1) on Saturday.

Christopher Newport 14, Stevenson 9: Darrell Curtis and Max Racich each scored two goals, but the visiting Mustangs (1-1) lost to the Captains (3-0) on Saturday.

Randolph-Macon 13, St. Mary’s 9: The host Seahawks (1-1) took an early lead before the Yellow Jackets (3-0) took control in the third quarter Friday. The game featured four ties. Cullen McKay made 17 saves for St. Mary’s. Keegan Preis (Loyola Blakefield), Nate Hochrein (Towson) and Ryan Roth each scored twice for the Seahawks. Avery Tankersley (Boys’ Latin) scored a game-high five goals for Randolph-Macon.

McDaniel 9, Marymount 6: Jason Fritz scored a game-high five goals to lead the visiting Green Terror over the Saints (0-1) on Wednesday. Brighton Lorber (Loyola Blakefield) made 12 saves and McDaniel held Marymount to one goal in each of the first three quarters.

Shenandoah 11, Hood 10: The host Hornets (1-1) took an 11-8 lead with 8:10 left to play and held off the Blazers on Wednesday. Logan Clingerman (Southern) had a hat trick for Shenandoah. Hood got two goals from Connor Flok, Muldoon, Robbie Wiley and Jay Lanigan.

Division I women’s lacrosse

No. 14 Penn 11, No. 12 Johns Hopkins 10: Niki Miles scored four goals and the host Quakers (2-0) held off a late rally by the Blue Jays (3-2) to secure a second straight win Saturday. Ashley Mackin scored seven goals for Hopkins, including three straight in the fourth quarter to pull the Blue Jays within one with four seconds left.

American 14, UMBC 11: Reagan Murdoch scored five goals to lead the host Eagles (3-2) over the Retrievers (2-2) on Saturday. Grace Bruce (Century) scored four goals and Katana Nelson, Lizzie Bateman (Glenelg) and Alexis Abe (Broadneck) each had two for UMBC, which next travels to Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday.

No. 17 Navy 18, Villanova 9: Tori DiCarlo scored seven goals and Emily Messinese (Gerstell) added five goals and an assist to power the host Mids (4-0) over the Wildcats (2-2) on Saturday.

No. 3 James Madison 20 Towson 10: The host Dukes (2-0) built a 12-5 first-half advantage and routed the Tigers (1-2) on Thursday. JMU got four goals from Jordan Peterson and Taylor Marchetti. Hannah Delahaye had a hat trick and Jo Torres (St. Mary’s) made seven saves for Towson.

No. 5 Maryland 14, Drexel 7: Eloise Clevenger (Marriotts Ridge) scored two of her three goals during an opening 6-0 run by the host Terps on Wednesday. Alex Wall had three goals for the Dragons (2-2). Emily Sterling (John Carroll) had nine saves for Maryland.

No. 9 Loyola Maryland 17, No. 12 Johns Hopkins 14: The visiting Greyhounds (3-0) used a 4-0 run in the second half to pull ahead of the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Loyola was led by Chase Boyle (6 goals), Georgia Latch (4 goals), Sydni Black (3 goals) and Catie Corolla (3 goals). Hopkins was led by Ava Angello and Ashley Mackin with three goals each.

No. 17 Navy 18, Mount St. Mary’s 9: The visiting Mids used a 9-0 run in the first half to pull away from the Mountaineers (0-3) on Wednesday. Navy got three goals each from Lola Leone, Messinese and DiCarlo. Logan Cook (Bel Air) and Christina Haspert (Century) each score twice for the Mount.

Division II women’s lacrosse

Frostburg State 14, Barton 8: Nicole Gray made 10 saves and the host Bobcats (1-0) beat the Bulldogs (2-1) on Friday. Julia Badolato scored four goals and Neila Haney and Kerri Hayes each had three for the Bobcats.

Division III women’s lacrosse

Hood 14, Virginia Wesleyan 3: Abby Burnette scored three goals and Mackenzie Demaio had two goals and two assists to lead the visiting Blazers (1-2) over the Marlins (1-1) on Saturday.

Randolph-Macon 18, McDaniel 10: Emma Miller scored six goals, but it wasn’t enough as the host Green Terror (1-1) fell to the Yellow Jackets (3-0) on Saturday.

St. Mary’s 24, Trinity (D.C.) 0: Senior captain MC Mortimer (Friends) recorded her 100th career point while sophomore midfielder Bridgette Carven (C. Milton Wright) had career bests of three goals and two assists as the host Seahawks (1-2) routed the Tigers (0-2).

Washington College 14, Stevenson 13, OT: Piper Evans scored the game-winner in overtime to lift the visiting Shoremen (3-0) over the Mustangs (0-3) on Saturday. Stevenson’s Kara Yarusso tied the game with 50 seconds left in regulation.

Southern Virginia 15, Goucher 3: Emily Burk, Molly Smith and Tatiana Emeruwa provided the goals for the visiting Gophers (0-2) in their loss to the Knights (1-0) on Saturday.

Washington College 15, St. Mary’s 13: Ashley Devlin scored four goals and Tobin Chambers (Broadneck) had three to lead the visiting Shorewomen over the Seahawks (0-2) on Wednesday. Hailey Betch (Severna Park) scored a game-high five goals and Colin Horton had four for St. Mary’s.

Bridgewater 15, Hood 9: Lauren Roberts scored a game-high five goals and Paige Mayers had three to lead the visiting Eagles (1-0) over the Blazers on Wednesday. Mackenzie Demaio scored four goals and Olivia Pickett had three for Hood.
