High school sports roundup (March 5)

Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, March 5.

Boys basketball

C. Milton Wright 57, Elkton 52: Tight throughout the game, the Mustangs (20-4) pulled away in the final three minutes to advance to Friday’s state quarterfinal round. Down 47-44 with just under three minutes to play, junior guard Noah Clarke tied the game with a 3-pointer as the Mustangs closed out the game with a 13-5 run.

Senior guard Cayne Woodland finished with 21 points, including five 3-pointers and junior center Dylan Sander had a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Larry Thompson, Kyle Ashman and Michael Holcomb also made timely contributions in the win.

“We’ve gotten a lot tougher and we were very top heavy in the beginning of the season [leaning on Woodland and Sander],” C. Milton Wright coach Mario Scott said. “But Kyle, Larry and others, we’re becoming a more complete team where if something is not going right, we can extra possessions, buckets, and stops.  I feel like we’re actually getting deeper than we expected at this point in the season.”

Dunbar 60, Eastern Tech 51: Leading from the start, the Poets (19-7) overcame a couple poor stretches to hold off the Mavericks and win the Class 2A North Region I title, leaning on a balanced effort with Todd Taylor scoring a team-high 11 points. Senior Jake Prior kept the Mavericks close with a hot hand from the 3-point line.

Edmondson 68, Forest Park 38: Now 23-2 on the season, the defending 1A state champions showed top form with a dominating performance against their Baltimore City rival Foresters. Junior point guard Darnell ‘DJ’ Dantzler Jr. finished with 18 points and 11 assists; sophomore center Chase Foster had 19 points and nine rebounds and senior guard Josiah Brown had nine points and 15 rebounds.

Carver Vo-Tech 61, New Town 48: The host Bears knocked out the defending Class 2A champions with a complete team performance. Dorrian Sands (14 points, six rebounds, three assists) and David Ross (14 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots) led the way with Rayvon Hassleberger adding 10 points and Kalial Colclough finishing with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.
