UMBC announced Monday afternoon that it will not renew the contract for Johnetta Hayes as the school’s women’s basketball coach.
“We would like to thank Johnetta for her service and commitment to UMBC women’s basketball and we wish her success moving forward,” athletic director Brian Barrio said in a statement.
Hayes, who was hired in April 2019, guided the Retrievers to a 39-81 overall record and a 26-44 mark in the America East Conference in five seasons. In its first year under Hayes, UMBC won six games in the conference, doubling its total from the previous winter. But members of the 2020-21 squad played in only eight games before canceling the rest of the campaign after the team had paused three times because individuals associated with the program tested positive for the coronavirus.
The school’s greatest success with Hayes occurred in 2022-23 when that squad went 10-6 in the America East for its second-best record and earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, it’s best seed since the 2016-17 team was seeded third. The Retrievers completed the 2023-24 campaign with a 10-19 record and a 6-10 mark in the conference.
