College basketball roundup: Coppin State women reach MEAC Tournament semifinals

Here’s a roundup of how local college basketball teams fared in their conference tournaments.

Men

Norfolk State 75, Coppin State 51: Christian Ings had 17 points and top-seeded Norfolk State beat No. 8 seed Coppin State on Wednesday night in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Norfolk, Virginia.

Ings shot 5-for-8 (4-for-6 from 3-point range) for the Spartans (22-10). Jack Doumbia scored 14 points, going 3 of 4 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Kuluel Mading had 12 points and went 6 of 8 from the field.

The Eagles (2-27) were led by Khali Horton, who posted 16 points. Coppin State also got 10 points and two steals from Greg Spurlock. Ryan Archey finished with nine points and two steals.

Norfolk State took the lead with 7:44 remaining in the first half and did not relinquish it. The score was 31-25 at halftime, with Ings racking up 11 points. Allen Betrand led the way with a team-high nine second-half points.

North Carolina Central 87, UMES 81: Fred Cleveland Jr. had 21 points in North Carolina Central’s win against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday night in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Cleveland also contributed six assists for the Eagles. Timmy Adedire scored 17 points and added eight rebounds. Po’Boigh King also scored 17 points.

Dionte Johnson led the way for the No. 7 seed Hawks (9-20) with 21 points and four assists. Devon Ellis added 18 points and three steals for UMES. Kelechi Okworogwo finished with 13 points and three blocks.

Cleveland put up 11 points in the first half for North Carolina Central, who led 40-37 at halftime.

Canisius 77, Mount St. Mary’s 61: Tre Dinkins had 24 points in Canisius’ victory against Mount St. Mary’s on March 12 in the opening round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Dinkins went 10 of 21 from the field (4-for-11 from 3-point range) for the Golden Griffins (14-17). Cam Palesse scored 19 points and added six rebounds. Devean Williams shot 6 of 11 and scored 12 points.

Deshayne Montgomery led the way for the No. 8 seed Mountaineers (13-19) with 26 points and Dakota Leffew scored 23.

College of Charleston 61, Towson 56: Reyne Smith scored 16 points and top-seeded Charleston closed on a 13-1 run to get past No. 5 seed Towson on March 11 in the semifinals of the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament.

Smith also contributed five rebounds for the Cougars (26-7). Bryce Butler shot 5 of 9 from the field and 2-for-3 from the line to add 13 points. Frankie Policelli shot 3-for-7 (1-for-5 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line to finish with 10 points.

The Tigers (20-14) were led in scoring by Tyler Tejada, who finished with 16 points. Charles Thompson added 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks for Towson. Dylan Williamson finished with 13 points.

UMass Lowell 94, UMBC 89, OT: UMBC’s season came to a heartbreaking end as the No. 7 seeded Retrievers fell in overtime against the No. 2 seeded River Hawks in the America East Tournament quarterfinals on March 9.

UMBC junior guard Marcus Banks Jr. led the visiting Retrievers (11-21) in points (24), rebounds (seven) and steals (three) while sophomore guard Dion Brown added 18 points and distributed a career and game-high eight assists. Graduate student forward Khydarius Smith and freshman guard Ace Valentine were also in double-figures with 15 points apiece. Graduate student forward Max Lorca-Lloyd recorded a game-high five blocks.

Brown became just the fourth Retriever to score 600 points in a single-season while Banks finished the season with 85 3-pointers, the fourth-most in program single-season history.

Boston University 70, Navy 61: Anthony Morales scored 17 points off the bench to help the host Terriers beat the Midshipmen on March 7 in the Patriot League Tournament second round.

Boston shot 50% from the field in the second half and 41% for the game while Navy (13-18) shot 36.1% from the field on the night. The Terriers went 7-for-24 (29.2%) from 3-point range and the Mids connected on 4 of 24 (16.7%) attempts from deep.

Austin Benigni scored 22 points and dished out five assists and Donovan Draper pulled down 14 rebounds for Navy, which returns all five starters and loses just one senior in Austin Inge.

Navy 64, Loyola Maryland 48: Loyola Maryland cut Navy’s 34-27 halftime lead to three less than a minute into the second half, but the Midshipmen went on an 11-1 run and led by double-digits the rest of the way in the Patriot League Tournament first round on March 5.

Benigni scored 24 points and Draper had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Navy.

Deon Perry, who saw his first action since Feb. 21 after missing three-plus games with an injury, finished with a team-high 21 points for the Greyhounds (7-25). Alonso Faure added seven points, and Golden Dike had a team-best eight rebounds.

Dike finished his career with 876 rebounds, third-most in program history, in a school-record 142 career games.

Women

Coppin State 61, UMES 55: Led by Laila Lawrence with 19 points and Angel Jones with 14, Coppin State defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday to advance to the MEAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016.

The Eagles (12-17) will take on No. 1 seed Norfolk State on Friday at noon.

Lawrence proved why she was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and an All-MEAC first-team selection, hitting 7 of 14 shots from the field to lead all scorers. She finished a rebound shy of a double-double, and her 306 rebounds this season are tied for the fourth-most in program history.

Jones made 5-of-11 field goals and added four free throws while adding six rebounds and a career-high four steals. Faith Blackstone, the league’s Sixth Player of the Year and an All-MEAC first-team honoree, hit two big 3-pointers and finished with nine points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists.

Chaniqwa Gilliam and Lainey Allen each scored 10 points for UMES (15-15).

Siena 80, Mount St. Mary’s 57: Ahniysha Jackson scored 22 points to lead the No. 3 seed Saints (18-11) to a dominant win over the No. 6 seed Mountaineers in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday.

Jessica Tomasetti had 17 points, Jo Raflo added 14 and Isabella Hunt chipped in 10 for Mount St. Mary’s (14-17).

Howard 49, Morgan State 44: Morgan State’s season came to an end Wednesday with a loss to second-seeded Howard in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament.

Playing in her final game with the Bears (8-22), Joelle Johnson scored a team-high 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting and pulled down five rebounds. Laila Fair recorded a game-high 10 rebounds and three blocks. MEAC All-Rookie Team selection Tamaria Rumph totaled seven rebounds, four assists and five points.

Iyanna Warren scored 15 points for Howard to eclipse 1,000 for her career. She added five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kaniyah Harris totaled 10 points, while Nile Miller led the team with nine rebounds to go with three blocks, two steals and four points.

Colgate 69, Navy 64: A turnaround season came to a dramatic end Monday night as the seventh-seeded Midshipmen were unable to hold off a hard-charging second-seeded Raiders team in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals.

Navy (14-17) came out on fire in the first half, shooting 67.9% from the field to take a 44-29 lead before the host Raiders (18-12) methodically scratched away with 21 second-half free throws and 12 second-chance points.

Zanai Barnett-Gay led Navy with 19 points on 8-for-16 shooting to go along with three rebounds and three assists. In her final college game, Sydne Watts recorded 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting, as well as a team-high six rebounds. Kyah Smith finished with 16 points and a career-high eight assists.

Vermont 54, UMBC 41: Anna Blount had a team-best 15 points and seven rebounds, but the Retrievers’ season ended with a loss at third-seeded Vermont on March 8 in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament.

Trinity Palacio and Jaliena Sanchez each tallied nine points for UMBC (10-19). Sanchez also had a game-high four steals, while the defense held Vermont to just 10% shooting from 3-point range.
