Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.
Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Jake Hauk, Loyola Blakefield, baseball
The senior catcher led the Dons (3-2) to a three-game sweep of rival Gilman in the opening week of Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference play, going 3-for-6 with two walks, six RBIs and one run scored. The Dons outscored the Greyhounds 21-7 in the wins on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Maryland commit is batting .429 on the season with nine RBIs.
Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Maddy Burns, Fallston, softball
The standout senior, who sees time at shortstop, catcher and pitcher, opened the season in grand fashion. The four-year starter and captain went a combined 9-for-9 in wins over Edgewood and Aberdeen on Thursday and Friday, respectively, driving in 14 runs and scoring seven runs. She finished with one double, one triple and a home run with four stolen bases.
