Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Friday, April 5.
Baseball
Kenwood 13, Loch Raven 2: Kyle Morgan doubled, singled and drove in five runs to lead the Blue Birds, who jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Denver Dettmer also drove in three runs in the win. Joe Weir and Kasen Wickline also had two-hit days.
Perry Hall 1, Hereford 0: An epic pitchers’ duel ended with the Gators’ JD Eckelt singling home the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh. Cameron Cooke, who had three of Perry Hall’s eight hits, scored the run. AJ Mendoza earned the win on the mound, throwing seven innings of one-hit ball with 14 strikeouts. Jack Kinsey threw six innings for Hereford, striking out 11 and only allowing six hits.
Dulaney 13, Towson 3: Alec Bream homered and drove in three runs to lead the Lions’ win. Maddox Helme and D Townsend each drove in two runs. Thomas Mezzullo and Drew Ranck also had RBIs.
Lansdowne 4, Pikesville 2: Matt O’Donnell threw 6 ⅔ innings, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out six. At the plate, Mike Lambert and Derek Ervin each drove in two runs.
Havre de Grace 9, North Harford 8: The Warriors erased a three-run deficit after five innings to force extras. They finally outlasted the Hawks after a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch scored Brady Walker. Dyllon Zachary-Nance had three hits and two RBIs to lead the win. AJ Rogers also drove in two runs. North Harford got a two-run home run from Jackson Arminger in the bottom of the eighth that extended the game. Jack Worden drove in three runs.
Chesapeake-AA 2, Northeast 1: Winning pitcher Dylan Adams worked 61/3 innings, gave up one run on three hits, walked four and struck out 12 and the visiting Cougars beat the Eagles. Chesapeake trailed 1-0 before scoring two runs in the fourth inning. Sean Carroll retired the final two batters to get the save.
St. Mary’s 10, Bishop Ireton (Va.) 4: Teagan McDonogh went 3-for-4 with a double and Parker Weekley went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the host Saints (4-3) over the Cardinals.
Softball
Hereford 12, Dundalk 1: Taylor Roberts threw a four-hitter to get the win and the Bulls offense racked up 13 hits in the five-inning game. Ellie Lysse and Alyssa McCaffery each homered. McCaffery totaled five RBIs in the game, while Lysse finished with three hits and three RBIs. Aly Wegrzyn, Ellie Lanford and Morgan Hall also drove in runs.
Chesapeake 12, Northeast 1: The Cougars (3-1) toasted their rivals behind a seven-run fourth inning and Alanna Watts’ four RBIs. Watts batted 2-for-2 with a triple and Ava Cicchetti added two RBIs.
Boys lacrosse
Reservoir 16, Oakland Mills 6: Kevin Sisk led the way for the Gators with four goals and two assists. Eli Nichols also scored four times and added an assist. Jack Nataro scored two goals and added three assists.
Chesapeake-AA 11, Annapolis 6: Chase Bivens (4 goals, 1 assist) and Talan Behler (3 goals, 2 assist) each totaled five points to lead the Cougars past the Panthers. Ricky Smith added a goal and an assist while Jake Forman, Ryan Kopp and Cade Shannon also scored. Hunter Cappe made nine saves in goal.
Archbishop Spalding 8, Loyola Blakefield 7, OT: Mason Cook scored the tying goal on a buzzer beater, but the visiting Dons (4-4, 1-1 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) fell to the Cavaliers (5-4, 1-1) in overtime. Spalding used tough defense to hold Loyola scoreless in the second quarter and third quarter. The Dons went on a 4-0 run in the fourth quarter, including a goal by Bennett Cook with seven seconds left prior to Cook’s game-tying goal. Luke Rush had two goals for Loyola.
McDonogh 20, Severn 3: The visiting Eagles (5-1, 1-0 MIAA A Conference) stretched their three-goal lead with a 7-0 run in the second quarter and beat the Admirals (4-6, 0-2). McDonogh was led by Brendan Millon with two goals and three assists, Eli Schaller with two goals and two assists, and Luke Miller with one goal and three assists. The Eagles had 14 players with at least a goal or an assist.
Fallston 8, C. Milton Wright 6: Landon Mills made seven saves as the Cougars triumphed in a defensive battle. Fallston’s eight goals were spread among seven scores. Jacob MacMillan was the only Cougar with two goals. He also handed off an assist.
Girls lacrosse
Edgewood 11, Patapsco 5: Mallory Hax scored five goals to lead the host Rams over the Patriots. Mozella Robinson had a hat trick and freshman Emmerson Whittington scored twice.
John Carroll 17, Mount de Sales 8: James Madison-bound Grace Marchetti scored five goals and Maryland-bound Lydia Ward had four goals to lead the visiting Patriots (4-3-1, 1-2 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) over the Sailors.(3-7, 0-6). Maryland-bound Julia Ward made six saves for John Carroll.
Urbana 8, Bel Air 7: The Bobcats were edged out in the nonconference game. Riley Manzo scored four in the loss, while Paige Feick had three goals and an assist. Darby Doehring also handed out an assist. Doehring and Feick each collected four draw controls.
Reservoir 15, Oakland Mills 2: Madi Ellis and Elizabeth Ripkin each had a hat trick in the win for the Gators, while Taylor Sung had two goals and an assist.
Long Reach 17, Atholton 4: Chiara Pompei scored five goals and added two assists to spearhead the Lightning in the win. Samantha Legge scored four goals plus an assist, while Delaney Daffan also scored four goals. Ace Jeffers made five saves. Hannah McGrath had a goal and an assist for Atholton.
Marriotts Ridge 13, Mt. Hebron 12: The Mustangs battled back from a four-goal halftime deficit to win. Rachel Harper led the way with five goals in the win, while Jenna Cratin had a hat trick. Allison Custer and Chrish Vaxmonsky each scored twice with Vaxmonsky adding an assist. For Mt. Hebron, Kaitlyn Magdar and Olivia Hoover each scored four times with Madgar adding an assist.
Chesapeake-AA 11, Annapolis 10, OT: Kelsie Payne scored four goals and the host Cougars beat the Panthers. Austin McFarland and Lily Patrick each scored twice for Chesapeake.
Francis Scott Key 18, Boonsboro 9: The Eagles doubled up the Warriors in a game where Drew Watkins scored her 100th career goal. Watkins had four goals, an assist and nine draw controls on the night. Kelsey Zepp led FSK with six points, scoring five goals and assisting on another. She also collected four ground balls. Lily Bertier scored three and caused four turnovers. Kensi Bancroft and Tessa Barber each scored two goals.
Coed tennis
Fallston 11, Havre de Grace 0: In the sweep, the Cougars got singles wins from Tanner Boyd, Gordon Lefkowitz, Edison Liu, Juliana Kovalets, Lindsey Dettloff and Meghan Perez. Double wins came from the teams of Ryan Blair and Colby Resh, Zach Boczar and Luca Cangelosi, Courtney Robinson and Campbell Wheeler, and Camryn Barrett and Jesse Kilian.
Girls tennis
Liberty 4, Francis Scott Key 1: The Lions swept doubles play and got a win at No. 1 singles from Grace Maerten to beat the Eagles. Amelia Mustico and Payton Oakley swept the No. 1 doubles match, 6-0, 6-0. Other wins came from the teams of Mia Leonhartt and Mallory Stevenso and Abigail Zentner and Lillian Kashima. FSK’s Caroline Kohr won second singles.
Marriotts Ridge 5, Guilford Park 0: Stella Lee and Erika Kang won in No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Mustangs. The doubles pairings of Christina Ottman and Haeli Shah, Mahika Juneja and Sophia Feldman and Cici Huang and Sana Huda each won.
Winters Mill 3, Century 2: Winters Mill won third-set tiebreakers in two doubles matches to pick up the win. In the loss, Century’s Bella Filippi won the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Century also got a win at No. 2 doubles from Gabby Poulose and Anna Wu.
Boys tennis
Liberty 5, Francis Scott Key 0: No Lion gave up more than two games in a set while earning the sweep. Nikhil Andhavarapu and Bradon Wilson won singles matches. Doubles wins came from the teams of Arjun Mistry and Hayden Speace, Austin Shade and Jason Murphy, and Chase King and Luke Meissner.
Marriotts Ridge 5, Guilford Park 0: Hamin Kim and Alex Xiang won in No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Mustangs. The doubles pairings of Tyler Wang and Jerry He, Sam Lim and Tobi Ijiyemi and Sai Anuj Chodavarapu and David Liu each won.
