Orioles’ homer hose returns after Jordan Westburg’s go-ahead 3-run shot vs. Red Sox

The homer hose is back.

The Orioles’ fan-favorite celebration returned in the visiting dugout Wednesday night at Fenway Park after Jordan Westburg hit a three-run shot in the top of the seventh inning to give Baltimore the lead in a 7-5 comeback victory.

The black-and-orange snake funnel — the brainchild of left-hander Cole Irvin, who coincidentally was on the mound Wednesday — made its debut last season as part of the club’s water-themed celebrations. It continued during the team’s march to 101 wins and an American League East title and helped create “Mr. Splash” and the “Bird Bath Splash Zone” in left field at Camden Yards, but it wasn’t seen in the first 10 games of this year’s campaign.

Instead, the Orioles tried revving the engines of a make-believe scooter or motorcycle when they reached base, and even bought a pair of handlebars to parade through the dugout after homers. But it didn’t stick, perhaps because of a slump at the plate, and it wasn’t long before the Orioles returned to an old favorite.

“We went back to our roots,” Westburg said after the game on the MASN broadcast.
