The Orioles’ game against the Cubs on Wednesday night went into a rain delay at 8:46 p.m. with Chicago leading 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lightning struck above Camden Yards and thunder could be heard by the announced 20,694 at the ballpark in the top half of the frame, approximately 13 minutes before the umpiring crew halted play. Fans were asked to seek shelter in covered areas because of the threat of lightning in the area. The Orioles announced the game would resume at 9:05 after the grounds crew removed the tarp only nine minutes into the delay.
Chicago scored three runs against Orioles starting pitcher Corbin Burnes, who was replaced by reliever Cionel Pérez in the seventh inning. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga lasted six innings as well, clearing either team of having to replace their All-Star starter early.
With the game already past the fifth inning, MLB would have considered the contest to be a “regulation game” in which the score would be ruled final if the game was not able to be resumed. The teams are set to play the interleague series finale Thursday night.
The Orioles have had 11 games interrupted by inclement weather this season, resulting in 18 hours and five minutes’ worth of delays heading into Wednesday’s game. Their most recent delay was June 14, when rain forced the Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies to wait out a delay of one hour and 11 minutes.
