Capital Gazette high school Athletes of the Week (Nov. 4-Nov. 10): Old Mill’s Tsedeke Jakovics, Crofton’s Olivia Feeley

The Capital Gazette is honoring one boy and one girl high school student-athlete each week as Athletes of the Week. To submit nominations, email kfominykh@baltsun.com or direct message @capgazsports on Instagram by Saturday evening.

Illness did not stopped the Patriots senior — also a county and region champion — from leaving his competition dusty in his wake at the 3A state cross country championship at Hereford High on Nov. 9. Jakovics created a quick gap between himself and the runner-up in the three-mile and finished with a time of 15 minutes, 52.4 seconds.

“I think Tsedeke executed a smart race plan with tremendous patience,” Old Mill coach Justin Murdock said. “Although, he was running from the front for most of the race, he remained poised all the way to the finish to capture his first cross country state title.”

The senior capped off a conquering postseason run with a goal and an assist in the 4A state field hockey championship on Nov. 9, which was a 2-0 shutout of rival Broadneck, a repeat in the class for the Cardinals and a third-straight program title. She also netted two goals and assisted a third in Crofton’s 3-0 shutout of Walt Whitman in the 3A semifinal on Nov. 7.

“She helped get the ball into our offensive end with her great stick skills,” Crofton coach Amy Skrickus said, “and had some key takeaways to stop the opposing team.”
