Loyola Blakefield names Rich Holzer its new football coach

Loyola Blakefield has named Rich Holzer its new varsity football coach.

Holzer replaces the school’s athletic director Blake Henry, who served on an interim basis this past season and guided the Dons to a 7-5 record and win over rival Calvert Hall in the 104th annual Turkey Bowl.

Holzer has extensive coaching experience, most recently enjoying successful stints at Northern-Calvert and Mount Saint Joseph. He spent five seasons at Northern, owning a 37-10 record and leading the Patriots to the program’s first Class 3A state championship in 2021. Before that, Holzer spent five years at Mount Saint Joseph, where he went 41-16 and, in 2019, led the Gaels to their first outright Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title since 1949.

Holzer, who earned degrees from Hofstra University and McDaniel College, also will teach at Loyola Blakefield.

“My family and I are deeply honored and excited to become part of this exceptional community. Loyola values character, excellence, and tradition, and I am eager to build a football program that not only achieves success on the field, but also instills pride throughout the community by shaping young men of integrity, resilience, and purpose,” Holzer said in a school release.

Holzer started his coaching career at Parkdale (2008-11) before moving on to Meade. While at Northern, he was named the 2021 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association District Coach of the Year.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rich as the next head varsity football coach at Loyola Blakefield,” Henry said in the release. “His proven success in developing young men, building strong teams, and competing at the highest level makes him the ideal leader for our program. We’re excited for him to begin working with our players and families and to see the impact he will bring to our community, both on and off the field.”
