Calvert Hall has named Tyler “Ty” Ward its new varsity football coach.

The appointment concludes a national search after former coach Josh Ward stepped down in December after four seasons. Josh Ward (no relation) led the Cardinals to three Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs appearances and the league title in 2021. This past season, they went 7-5, including a 17-14 loss to Loyola Blakefield in the 104th Turkey Bowl that marked their third setback to the rival Dons in the past four years.

Tyler Ward, 33, most recently served as coach at Bethlehem Catholic High School in Pennsylvania, going 13-12 in two seasons. In 2023, the Charlottesville, Virginia, native led the team to the state’s District 11 championship when he was named Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Coach of the Year. Ward, who earned degrees from Lehigh and the University of West Alabama, also served as associate head coach and offensive coach at Alabama power Oak Mountain. He has college coaching experience at Lehigh and Franklin & Marshall.

“We could not be more excited to welcome Ty to the Calvert Hall family,” athletic director Dan Mulford said in a statement. “He takes great pride in developing young men on and off the football field with a tremendous focus on program culture. His experiences at Bethlehem Catholic and Oak Mountain are the perfect blend of what it means to be a student-athlete at Calvert Hall — a commitment to our Lasallian Catholic values, success in the classroom, and performing at the highest level of competition.”

Said Ward: “I am ecstatic to be offered this dream experience at Calvert Hall. This opportunity is a privilege to work and coach at a prestigious institution grounded in rich athletic and academic traditions. I look forward to meeting the team and getting to work.”

The announcement comes the same day rival Loyola Blakefield announced it named Rich Holzer as its new coach.
